I love sharing my destination guides and travel tips for taking kids around the world! But I also love introducing my readers to fun things they can do close to home. Unless you are a full-time travel family (and I have met many through blogging and social media) you are spending more time at home than traveling. For that reason, I like to have lots of activities in my back pocket to tuck away for a holiday or weekend day when we are just hanging on Long Island. Over the last year, we have been introduced to roller skating and it has quickly become my kids’ favorite indoor activity! So I am super excited to share with you some more info on the best place to go roller skating on Long Island and why I know you will love roller skating too!
I will be spending the next year as a United Skates Social Media ambassador. Our previous experiences at United Skates have been not sponsored. As always, opinions are all my own.
Best Place to go Roller Skating on Long Island
Last summer, my son was invited to a birthday party at United Skates in Seaford, Long Island. We were so excited to try this new-to-us activity, although a little hesitant because little man had never roller skated before! We quickly fell in love with roller skating and I think your family will too!
Reasons to Love Roller Skating
Right off the bat, I was in love with roller skating for two reasons. First of all, the weekend of said birthday party, hubby was traveling. I HATE having to get a babysitter for one kid to bring the other to a party, BUT a United Skates party takes place during a skating session open to the public, so I could just pay admission and skate rental for baby girl to participate as well!
Secondly, I was a little nervous about little man getting hurt while roller skating! BUT at United Skates they give all skaters wrist guards free of charge (and we brought our own bike helmets) so we were super excited to try something new. Kids can also rent a “triangle” (called a skate mate) which is like a walker on wheels to help keep them upright and prevent them from falling. This is a great way for smaller kids to get started.
At first, roller skating was really challenging. The kids had never done any skating activity, so this was a whole new set of gross motor skills. But, what I loved the most about roller skating was that in a two-hour window the kids could go from barely staying upright to skating around the rink. Roller Skating is challenging, but not an impossible physical activity! It is something that a lower elementary school age child can get the hang of in one session!
At United Skates, rental skate sizes start at a Toddler 7 – and go all the way up to a size 14 adult! They also rent rollerblades, size 1 and up!
Now if skating isn’t your thing, that’s okay – at United Skates parents do not have to skate, or even pay admission. Parents can wear street shoes onto the rink to help their little ones get started! This made such a difference in giving the kids the confidence to get going on their own!
Have a Roller Skating Birthday Party at United Skates
This spring, baby girl went roller skating with her Girl Scout troop. Again, it was easy to bring little man along and just pay his admission and skate rental. This time around she quickly picked up on skating and begged all summer to go back!
Since her birthday is at the end of summer, she decided she wanted to have her 7th birthday party at United Skates. Having been to birthday parties there before, I knew this was a fun, and low-key (read: easy) birthday party to throw. You just show up, the kids skate, they eat, they play some arcade games and that’s it!
When I went to the United Skates website to book the party I was super pleased to see that not only could I book the party online, a roller skating party is one of the most affordable parties we have thrown!
Baby girl, and her friends had a blast at her Thursday afternoon, end of summer, skating party. Roller skating was a great break from the heat of summer and the folks at United Skates made the party a breeze. We just showed up with a cake and favors and the party staff handled the rest! Hubby was super happy when he was handed the bill because a United Skates party was much cheaper than some of the other party places we have used! And the kids loved it, which at the end of the day, is the most important!
PRO-TIP: Bring your own glow sticks to your roller skate party – I bought these glow sticks from amazon and they were a big hit!
Add United Skates to your list of Favorite Indoor Activities
My readers know that I love the heat, I love being outdoors, especially at the beach. On a beautiful, hot summer day, I’m probably not thinking about indoor activities. But, the cold season on Long Island drags on for months and roller skating is the perfect activity for those indoor days! United Skates has sessions during the week in the afternoons, and all day on the weekends! Check the United Skates Seaford schedule here.
Roller Skating is a great way to get your kids active, have fun, and stay warm in the colder months! What I love is you can just show up, there is no special equipment to buy and everything you need can be rented at United Skates! Just wear some socks and comfortable clothes! (NOTE: Some kids bring their own bike helmets, although it is not a roller skating requirement)

This looks so fun! I also like that it’s one of those “easy birthday party” destinations. Who doesn’t love that? Now I may need to make a visit to my local rink!
I used to go roller skating as a kid and loved it! I’m looking forward to bringing my kids when they get a little older.

Major throwback! I haven’t been roller skating in YEEEEARS! I was always better at roller blading
Whoever invented the “triangle” is a genius! I can’t wait to take MacKenlee skating when she’s older!
