This summer, our family vacation time was limited to five nights. Yes, just five nights that my kids crazy summer schedules were both free so we could do a little getaway. We decided that a relaxing beach vacation would be perfect for a five night trip, and I had been wanting to experience an Iberostar property. I have sent lots of guests to Iberostar Selection Cancun (and the adults only Coral Tower) so I knew this would be a solid choice. We had the most wonderful vacation and I keep reading for my full Iberostar Selection Cancun Review.
Iberostar Selection Cancun Review – A Family Friendly Mexico All-Inclusive Resort
Where is the Iberostar Selection Cancun Resort?
Iberostar Selection Cancun is a family-friendly, all-inclusive resort located on the south end of Cancun’s hotel zone. The resort is only about a 15-20 minute ride from the Cancun airport, so a great choice for a short trip, or if you already have a long day of travel.
I love the hotel zone for its proximity to the airport and the great beaches. We were lucky on our June 2023 stay that the seaweed was very minimal and the resort was able to keep the beach clean. When I stayed at the Hyatt Zilara Cancun back in July 2021, same thing, the beach was very clean and swimmable.
What are the levels at Iberostar?
This resort is a Selection resort, which is Iberostar’s more elevated option. In Cancun, they have a Coral Level tower, which here is adults-only. In Dominican Republic, the Coral property is family friendly, so its confusing!
At Selection properties, you get unlimited ala carte dining, and room service from 11am to 11pm. The Coral building in Cancun has 24 hour room service, elevated spirits and also an ala carte breakfast option.
At other Iberostars, you might also see a Grand property (like when I toured the three Iberostars in Montego Bay when I stayed at the Hilton Rose Hall). The Grand properties are the highest level, and are adults only. Many rooms in the Grand properties include Butler service.
Choosing an all-inclusive resort can be tough. Some are big, some are small, some are on the beach, some just near it. Some resorts have better food, more drink options, and more entertainment than others. Of course, there is your budget to consider as well!
For those reasons, it’s always best to consult with a travel professional to help find the perfect resort for you next vacation. And the best part? My services are free!
Rooms at Iberostar Selection Cancun
We stayed in their standard ocean view room. The rooms at Iberostar Selection Cancun are offered with a king bed and double soda bed OR two double beds, no sofa. These rooms have a Juliet balcony and were recently renovated.
The superior ocean view rooms have full balconies, but are the same internal size as the standard rooms. These rooms are all located in the iconic pyramid building.
The villas are slightly larger (50 square meters vs 37) and all have balconies along with separate tub/showers. The villas are located in 2-3 story buildings closer to the beach, but note there are no elevators in these buildings.
I personally love the swim-up, oceanfront villas! Gorgeous views!
Later this summer, the resort will start to offer their “two bedroom family suites” which is a guaranteed connecting category which offers a standard one king room, connected to a room with two double beds.
Do note, the bedding configuration at Iberostar selection Cancun are always on request. They do their best to honor the requests, but it’s never a guarantee.
Restaurants at Iberostar Selection Cancun
I have to say, during our five night stay, I was SUPER IMPRESSED with the food – both the variety and quality.
For dinner, Iberostar Selection Cancun requires reservation at a few of their restaurants, but not the Mexican restaurant or the buffet. Definitely make your reservations when you arrive at the resort.
For dinner, the ala carte restaurants include:
Mexican – with a set menu served family style. You can choose from the standard menu or vegan menu. We sampled off both and everything was fantastic. Plus you can get as much of any item that you would like!
Italian – we loved this meal as well. Italian food at resorts always gives me pause, but this was excellent. IBEROSTAR SELECTION CANCUN PRO-TIP: Order the cacio e pepe which is served in a cheese wheel!
Steak – My family also enjoyed the steaks here. I had the vegetarian option and a bunch of side dishes.
American Bistro – Sadly, this was the one ala carte we did not get try. We had a long excursion one day ended up at the buffet that night.
Hibachi – always a fun time! And the food was really good.
Other eateries at Iberostar Selection Cancun include the buffet (open for breakfast, lunch and dinner), the Burger Bar (open for lunch), the beachside food truck (also opened for lunch), the coffee shop (open 24 hours) and the poolside bar where you get ice cream and churros.
Iberostar Selection Cancun also offers room service from 11am – 11pm. You can order your food directly from the Iberostar app.
So yes, the buffet or coffee shop are the only breakfast options.
Things to do at Iberostar Selection Cancun
Iberostar Selection Cancun was a super fun resort. I loved that there was always poolside activities throughout the day like pool volleyball, water polo, funny competitions, DJ, live music, bingo, and aqua fit. The activities staff was awesome!
And speaking of pools, the pool area is so beautiful, and very large. There is a kiddie splash area, (which yes, my teen and tween did enjoy!), an activities pool, and a swim up bar.
The beach at Iberostar Selection Cancun is one of the best I’ve seen in Mexico. At the time of our visit, the seaweed was minimal, and the staff was able to rake it up. The water was so beautiful.
In the front of the resort there are two tennis courts and a FIFA regulation size soccer field. There is also an 18-hole golf course adjacent to the resort. So sports lovers would have plenty to occupy them!
Lastly, Iberostar Selection Cancun has a full service spa, complete with hydrotherapy circuit (which you can purchase ala carte). On my visit, I opted for a beachside massage – heavenly!

Tips for Visiting Iberostar Selection Cancun
Sign up for rock tails, which takes place on Friday nights for a small cost. This is a mixology rock show.
Bring water bottles. Iberostar Selection Cancun is plastic free, so guests are given large reusable bottles in their rooms, and there is a filtered water station on each floor.
Pool towels are available from 9am to 6pm. At the towel shack, you can borrow sports balls as well.
Rent a Bali bed, 85$ per day at the time of our visit. This also afforded us some shade, a great spot by the pool and dedicated food and beverage servers.
Download the Iberostar app to see daily schedule of activities, order room service, and see your dinner reservations.
Bring a pool float and YETI cup – a must for any all-inclusive trip!
