As the cold weather arrives here in New York, I had been looking at a warm weather getaway with baby girl. It’s her turn for a trip with mommy, since little man took the last mommy trip, going to Dutchess County with me. A few weeks ago, I saw some of the airlines were having sales (which I believe makes prices come down across the board) and I found two tickets from JFK to Orlando for less than $200 each!
Sadly, we hesitated on buying them. Baby girl was on the fence about not wanting to miss stuff at home to go to Orlando, and by the time I convinced her to go with me, the sale had ended and the fares had gone up.
WAY UP!
I feel like this is a familiar tale – do I book? Not book? Wait? Will prices go up? Go down? Will there be another sale?
It’s really hard to ever know if you are getting the best prices when booking travel. Except for one weekend a year when you can know you are getting great sales. When is that?
Let me share.
This post is sponsored by Skyscanner. As always, all opinions are all my own.
Where to find the best Black Friday and Cyber Monday Airline Deals
Of course, right after this missed Florida opportunity, I started poking around the internet looking at prices for our upcoming spring break trip to Italy. Looking to go from New York to Milan or Rome, four international tickets, over Easter break, these tickets were not going to be cheap! I am obviously on the hunt for the lowest fare!
Now again, booking flights is a bit of a gamble BUT there is one time of year when you can lower the house edge and book, especially international flights, confident that you indeed got the best price.
I know what you are thinking – when? Where? HOW!!!!????

Black Friday & Cyber Monday Flight Deals
Just like that hot new toy, the best prices of the year on international flights can be found on the shopping days around Thanksgiving.
Here in the United States, Thanksgiving falls on the fourth Thursday of November. On that Thursday, we participate in turkey trots, watch parades, stuff ourselves silly with food and drink, and give thanks for all that we have. The following day, people wait in line for hours, trample each other (sadly true) and hit the malls for the best deals on well, everything! Since many people are off work or school on the Friday after Thanksgiving the stores use deep discounts to lure folks in to start their holiday shopping. This ONE day puts so many businesses in the BLACK for the year (meaning, profitable) it has become known as BLACK FRIDAY.
In the years when the internet was in its infancy, and most people only had access to the web at their jobs, the Monday following Thanksgiving became known as CYBER MONDAY – when online businesses would discount their items in anticipation of folks returning to their computers to holiday shop!
Now in 2020, great deals can be found across the board that entire weekend! From Black Friday, through the weekend, and on Cyber Monday. In 2019, Thanksgiving falls on November 26, making November 27th Black Friday and November 30 Cyber Monday!
In 2017, Skyscanner took a look at domestic and international flight prices for the week surrounding Thanksgiving and Christmas. The proof is definitely in the data!

Using Skyscanner to book your Black Friday Travel Deals
What is Skyscanner? Again, for now – bookmark their Black Friday Flight Deals page, but be SURE to return to their site on the Black Friday/Cyber Monday weekend to book your tickets at great prices.
Skyscanner is a site (and an app) where you can search for cheap flights. You can also search for hotels and rental cars on Skyscanner!
Right now, tickets to Milan over our Easter break are hovering around $1000/person, so we are definitely hoping to cash in on a Black Friday sale. Skyscanner aggregates across millions of flights, so you know they are doing all the research for you, sale day, or not!
Not sure where you are headed? No problem! With Skyscanner, you can use their Everywhere Search feature to get inspiration and great prices when you aren’t 100% sure where you want to go!
A January warm-weather getaway might make a nice stocking stuffer for that special person in your life!
So right now, I’m confident its best to WAIT until Black Friday to book our Italy tickets. After all the Thanksgiving food and family time, Skyscanner will be my first stop in booking these flights on Black Friday!

Believe me, I am eagerly waiting for Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals. So far, I have not found a good deal for Europe (next year). Hope things get better for the after Thanksgiving weekend. Last year, I scored $400 flights from LA to London. I pinned, tweeted and flipped your post.
I guess this is great if you can just pack a bag and go, but is it also working on planned dates? we would love to have some cheap family tickets 🙂 will have a try anyway and who knows maybe it works.
no, yes – you can search for specific dates. Thats our plan for spring break. I mean there is a little flexibility but more or less there is about 10 days off of school!
